To Be Like Us
Im surprised
When the world yearns
To be like us
They dream of an evening
Nay, a cool windy night even
Spent sitting by the sea
By the music of the waves
As they rush, madly, in a frenzy
Against the rocks; the rocks hold
They dream of being bold
And scaling that sheer precipice
That juts out from the beach
Leaning against the sea
And from that pedestal
Gaze out across the open waters
They dream for all that we do
For all that they see us do
For all that they're told we do
But, they dream with their eyes closed
That distinction is important here
For we live with our eyes open
Open to that misty spray of water
That lovechild of the waves and the rocks
Open, as it time and again
Makes us shed a salty tear
